Strengthen public institutions and services for sustainable development

P.e. Suchet Louis - May 17 2011, 9:42 AM

Heartiest congratulations on your election to the presidency of Haiti.

I read your manifesto and program of action for developing Haiti. They are good and to the point.

But Mr.President, keep in mind that Haiti cannot develop sustainably without :a) your government enabling the Haitians to be well educated and to become intellectually and technically capable of PRODUCING GOODS AND SERVICES so that Haiti can attract local and international private sector and b) your government providing a secure environment to attract private sector investments NOT ONLY IN IMPORTING AND SELLING but also in PRODUCING for local consumption and export.

Haiti is making DR richer every day and we know how. Haitian businesses are reaping the profit from importing from other exporting countries at the expense of the Haitian poor.

In concluding your address to the Haitians and to the world you said" This is a new Haiti, open for business now!".

Mr. President, have your government open for NEW TYPE OF BUSINESS and not business as usual.

Now, I believe you can have your government convince the private sector to really engage in Haiti's development first and then profit making, can you not?

If I get a response from you or your office, I will address the following topics
1) How to involve the thousands of NGOs in your goal of strengthening public services
2) How to engage the donor community ( bilateral and multilateral agencies) in enabling your government to really lead the development.

I am sure that you know no country ever develops with foreign aid only. Good examples are China, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, Ghana is on its way.

Respectfully,
