Restavek Children

Julie Berger - May 3 2011, 2:54 PM

Hello Mr. Martelly, as a doctor's wife, mother, medical mission coordinator of a mobile clinic that comes to help in Haiti and Compassion International advocate and sponsor of children around the world, I ask you to step up and view the basic human rights of all children with dignity and honor and abolish all forms of Restavek practices.

We both know that the promises made to parents of Restavek children are false and never of good intention.

Our clinics have now treated Restavek children, and when compiling the patient information, I literally had to stop and breathe as not to get sick to my stomach.

In 2011, there is absolutely no excuse for this type of treatment to be allowed or tolerated.

These children, all children in Haiti, are the future sir of your country and need to learn that they matter, that they are not worthless and that someone cares enough to stop such inhumane and criminal practices in a time when the world is watching and knows better.

This is truly your chance to show the Haitian people and the world you are an educated, kind and decent man who knows what must be done to abolish slavery once and for all in the country that is so important to you and you will now be in charge of. You can make a difference and although you have many battles to face going forward, nothing is more important that this one. God bless you and wishing you and all the precious people of Haiti a chance to finally experience hope and change that you all so deserve.
